Making the world a better place, one idiot at a time

... and we're back.

Right. After much to-ing and fro-ing, and hitting mySql with a big stick, I’m back online (only Overman knows the real, rather embarassing, reason that the site was down for so long, and I’m hoping he’ll keep it to himself). Sorry about the downtime there – I know there were thousands of eager readers desperately spamming F5 in a pitiful attempt to bring the site back up. Fear not. We’re rolling.

I seem to have lost a couple of posts through database corruption, but – quite frankly – it’s not a major loss to the literary world. The last post i made before it went a merde seems to have permanently locked itself as private, as well. If you want to read it, you’ll have to register as a site user, and log in. I’m not going to tell you what it was, in a pathetic attempt to tempt you into registering.

At the moment, this site runs on Wordpress, on some cheap hosting that I bought for five pence and a bit of string a couple of years ago. I’ve now got much better dedicated hosting, so I’ll be moving IHS over there when I get a moment. I’ll probably also move from Wordpress to Typo, because I feel more comfortable with Ruby on Rails that I do with PHP.

Anyway, welcome back. Tune in again soon for more witticisms and insightful comments of the high standard that you’ve come to expect.

David Heinemeier Hansson, I want your babies

Have I mentioned how much I love Ruby On Rails recently? It’s just … so … I’m sorry, I’m too emotional right now. I have a fairly standard process of development when I’m learning a new language or tool (or both, in this case). It’s an iterative process, which involves me learning the basics and thinking that I understand it, then going back to the beginning and learning it all again, and really understanding it this time. I finished iteration 2 for Ruby some time ago, and I’m now well into iteration 3 (actually using the damn thing in a sufficiently productive way that I actually achieve something other than working through tutorials). For the Rails framework, though, I haven’t got quite as far. I’m right in the middle of iteration 2 now, and I have to say I’m loving it. Iteration 1 was enough to make me phone up all my friends to tell them how great it was, but now I really love it.

Internet Explorer is a cancer

Posted by johnnie Wed, 23 Aug 2006 18:18:00 GMT

I’ve been complaining for a long time about Internet Explorer. Version 6 currently makes my life a living hell, and version 7 isn’t set to do much about that. Paul Thurrott agrees with me. In fact, he goes further, describing IE as a cancer on the Web that must be stopped, and claiming that the amount of time it’s taken Microsoft to finally start work on IE7 has set back Web development by an immeasurable amount of time.

(Mind you, version 6 has it’s own problems)

Thurrott recommends a complete boycott of Internet Explorer. So do I. Please, please, please … get a better browser.

Different strokes for different folks

Posted by johnnie Fri, 23 Jun 2006 14:23:54 GMT

I’m writing this post from my mum’s computer. I’m back in Yorkshire over the weekend, for a friend’s 21st birthday party, and I’m taking the opportunity to get some work hours in whilst Laura’s in Leeds (buying a present for the afore-mentioned party – we’re really not too organised about these things). Actually, I kind of feel like I’ve broken in to the house. Both parents are away for the weekend (it’s their wedding anniversay), so I’ve let myself in. The cats don’t know what’s going on – they haven’t seen me for months.

So, like I said, using my mum’s PC. It’s a fairly standard PC World-a-like, with winxp home installed. As you might expect, the pre-installed software is still in place. She browses the net with an unpatched copy of IE6 and uses Outlook Express for her email (automatically configured by her ISP). The thing is, some of my favourite websites look totally different on this machine.

Weird CSS bug No. 17145

Posted by johnnie Tue, 20 Jun 2006 18:04:46 GMT

Have you noticed the downright weird behaviour on the links (comment and categories) at the bottom of each post? On first loading the page, they display in some weird illegible grey colour. Hover over them and they darken. Here’s the strange bit, though – once you’ve hovered once, they stay dark. This only happens in non-IE browsers, and only affects <a> tags within an <h2> block.

Answers on a postcard please. I’m stumped on this one.
